Free anti-virus software too good to be true
Cost-conscious users who search for free security products on the internet are exposing themselves to risk, an expert has said.
Trawling the internet for free anti-virus and other such software can often lead to the download of fake and potentially harmful programmes such as trojans, according to security software manufacture Sophos.
Disruptive programmes can lead to a range of problems including server downtime and website outages, highlighting the importance of the use of website monitoring software in keeping track of these problems. Sophos' Graham Cluely says: "There is a real problem with hackers using paid-for search engine adverts to bring traffic to their websites, with the ultimate aim of conning people out of money."
